Today I want to share with you how I made my own DIY Fresh Eggs Sign!
I had a very old cutting board that had seen better days. Years of dishwashing (I know) and daily use caused it to crack and splinter. I hated to throw away perfectly good wood, so I decided to create something new out of it.
This method is something like a reverse whitewash using white paint and wood stain.
What you’ll need:
- Wood board (mine is 13.4 x 10)
- White chalk paint
- Wood stain in your preferred color
- Paint brushes
- Silkscreen stencil
First, sand your wood until it is smooth. I used 120 grit for this part. Then, I painted one layer of white chalk paint. I used this one. Let dry, lightly sand again, and paint a second layer.
When dry, I used a piece of 400 grit sandpaper and heavily distressed the board. I took the paint off around the edges and other areas. Distress however much you like.
Then, I painted over the board with stain. I used this stain.
Once cured (I left it for a few days) I used this stencil and the white chalk paint. This stencil was so cool to work with. It has an adhesive on the back so it makes for crisp lines. The mesh gave it a homemade, weathered look. Highly recommend these! They are also reusable!
And voila! A brand new sign to hang up in my new house. All I need now is some hardware.
