An Open Letter To My 6 Year Old

Dear Jaden,

I hope that you have enjoyed your summer. I hope that your body and brain have benefited from lazy days, 10 hour lego building sessions, and plenty of mindless Netflix.

As a mom, it is sometimes hard for me to let you just be. I feel like it's my duty to keep your reading skills sharp and your math skills tuned. But on the other hand, I know how wonderful it is to have no pressure to "learn". I hope our nightly Harry Potter chapters have been enough.

As you are about to enter first grade, I want you to know a couple of things. First, I want you to know how very proud your daddy and I are of you. You are a fast learner, a great big brother, a very caring soul, and our comedian. There is nothing you can do that will make us love you less.

Second, I want you to know that we will always have your back. School is sometimes hard. It isn't just the work that makes it hard. It's learning how to be friendly with kids that aren't always nice. It's sometimes feeling like you were right and your teacher was wrong (even if maybe it's the opposite). It's learning to remember that the kid who annoys you might just be lonely and in need of your friendship. And sometimes it's learning to stand up against a bully.

No matter what comes your way, you can bet that we are behind you.

I know that you are going to have a great year. When the time comes for early mornings, long school days, and nightly homework, I know that you will be ready to take it all on. You are smart and you are strong.

Until then, keep building your lego creations and relax. You deserve it.

I love you, Jader Bug.

Love, Mama
